A CHRONOLOGY by Carol Robb At a very young age, 18 months I believe, Mom was sent back to England to be raised by her Grandmother and Aunt. She must have been 13 or 14 when her father re-married and she was sent again to Rossland. They were good to her in England and she loved the country but they were very old-fashioned. Once back in Canada, she pestered her father until he bought her a piano. He announced that he was not going to pay for lessons so she learned on her own. He decided she would benefit from playing with the Rossland Orchestra and so with tears streaming down her cheeks she tried to keep up with the orchestra. The conductor was kindly and gave her good tips starting with just the melody then adding the bass, later putting in the middle voices. Gradually she caught on. Rossland was a thriving mining town and Grandad was always warning her to stay away from the hoochie-koochie girls, the red light district and the Chinese community. The Roman Catholics were also to be avoided. Mom went to Tacoma for nurses training but had to leave after her second year due to poor health - she was told to come back when she had gained weight and was healthy. She never did but worked in a doctor’s office in Rossland where she performed many tasks usually performed by an R. N. She also made baby clothes and had very successful sales in her father’s store. Mom & Dad met when she was teaching Sunday School and he dared to interupt her class to ask for the rector. They wanted to marry but Grandad didn’t approve so they went off on their own and married in North Vancouver (I think). Dad went off to fight in the 1st World War and Mom and Mrs. Salter and a few others waited out the war together in N. Van. Mom and another friend rowed out to the ? light each day and lit it. 1983, May 16 Died in Penticton BC. |
