Dulcamara looks on as the somewhat dim-witted, but very likeable Nemorino, in a hilarious twist of logic, happily anticipates the affect the elixir on Adina...after HE drinks it! |
Nemorino is overjoyed at the prospect of his new life with Adina and becomes over-confident of his effect on her |
Adina is appalled at Nemorino's cocky indifference and obvious tipsy condition |
Nemorino is confused as to why the elixir he just drank is not yet having any effect on Adina |
Full stage shot- Adina and Nemorino face off: both confused as to each others behaviour and both too stubborn to concede |
The crowd enters and looks on as tension builds between Nemorino, Belcore and Adina |
Stage left: Nemorino watches Belcore woo Adina: soldiers and the curious crowd |
Belcore proposes to Adina and she, wanting to punish Nemorino for his boorish behaviour, accepts. Nemorino, begging for a days' delay of their wedding (to give the elixir time to work!), but denied it, is devastaed. |
Stage left: the amused crowd watches the love-triangle infold |
Sopranos: Priscilla Roberts, Keren Chard, Aino Fingerhut, Giannetta and little Julia Smith. |
The fickle villagers laugh at the desparately unhappy Nemorino |
The village children encircle the despondant Nemorino and dance around him in ridicule, to the great amusement of the crowd |
The pre-wedding festivities begin as the wedding cake is brought in by Aino Fingerhut |
The villagers await the wedding party as Dr. Dulcamara, always alert to a opportune moment to get a free meal, and a willing audience, appoints himself the Master of Ceremonies and ensures his seat at the head table. |
The wedding table: Erich Lopp, Giannetta, Belcore, Adina, Dulcamara and Nora Rosales. |
Belcore welcomes and intoduces the lawyer, Dietger Hollmann, commissioned to perform the wedding ceremony. |
Nemorino begs Dulcamara for more elixir, but the Doctor refuses to donate any to him: he expects payment |
The penniles Nemorino, desparate for money to buy more elixir and win his Adina's heart, confides in Belcore (who has returned to the scene unhappy, becuase Adina has postponed the wedding for a day) his financial woes. Belcore convinces Nemorino to join the army, who pay their recruits well, and Nemorino agrees. |
Giannetta gathers all the village women to tell them about the latest juiciest gossip...about Nemorino! |
It is discovered that Nemorino's very sick, very wealthy Uncle has just that hour died, and passed his fortune onto Nemorino, instantly making him "most eligable bachelor"! |
Nemorino, ignorant of the death of his Uncle and his newly acquired wealth, stumbles in quite drunk, having consumed several bottles of the elixir he bought with the recriutment payment. The ladies gather arround him and begin to flirt. |
Nemorino is overwhelmed by attentive and willing women and naturally thinks that his extra bottles of "elixir" did the trick! |
Adina is furious with Nemorino for enjoying the womens attentions and for joining the army. She buys back his enlistment papers and later, tells him she did it because she loves him. |
Nemorino sings about his terrible heartache. |
Full stage shot: The crowd is happy to see Adina and Nemorino admit their love and unite at last. |
Belcore accepts the situation graciously, telling everyone that fortunatley, he has many beauties at his beck and call. He attributes Nemorino's new found wealth and luck in love to the powers of the elixir. |
Dulcamara accepts credit for the effectiveness his potent elixir (although he is totally stumped to why this "elixir" worked at all!?), bringing in an economy sized bottle to sell (or keep for his own use?). He gleefully sells a few more bottles before he leaves town. |
The five soloists take a well deserved bow to the delight of the audience. |
